Day wise travel itinerary

Your Ladakh odyssey begins with a flight into Leh, where mountain walls rise to greet you. From here, drive to the serene Sham Valley, a gentler altitude to help you acclimatize. The rest of the day is for rest, quiet walks, and taking in the crisp Himalayan air before the adventure intensifies.

The road leads west towards Lamayuru’s moon-like landscapes before climbing over Sir Sir La (4,850 m) and Singge La (5,090 m). These dramatic passes reveal sweeping views of valleys carved by wind and ice. Pass Photoksar’s tiny hamlet, cross Kilima Bridge, and, if time allows, explore Zangla Fort — a crumbling sentinel of Zanskar’s history. By evening, arrive at Padum, the cultural and administrative heart of Zanskar.

Spend the day soaking in Zanskar’s spiritual essence. Visit Sani Monastery, believed to be one of the oldest in the region, wander through the hilltop Stongdey Gompa, and explore Karsha — Zanskar’s largest monastic complex, alive with prayer flags and chanting monks.

Today takes you deeper into Lungna Valley. Drive to Khangsar Purney, where the road ends and the trail begins. A 2–3 hour trek along the Tsarap River leads to Phuktal Gompa — a marvel of architecture clinging to a cliffside, accessible only by foot. Return to Purney for the night, carrying the magic of a place lost in time.

Head north across the high-altitude Shinku La Pass (16,600 ft), with its jaw-dropping views and prayer-flag-laden cairns. Stop at the sacred Gombo Rangjan peak before descending into the wide plains of Sarchu, a remote overnight halt between Himachal and Ladakh.

The ride turns east towards the brackish waters of Tsokar Lake, where wild kiang (Tibetan wild asses) roam the marshlands. Pass steaming sulphur springs at Puga and crest Polakongka Pass before reaching Tsomoriri Lake — a sapphire jewel at 4,522 m, surrounded by snow-capped peaks and home to migratory birds.

Follow the road to Mahe Bridge, then on to Nyoma and finally Hanle — one of the highest and most isolated villages in Ladakh. The night sky here is among the clearest on Earth, making the Hanle Observatory a perfect spot for stargazing.

The crown jewel of the trip: Umling La (19,300 ft), the highest motorable road in the world. The air is razor-thin, the ride is raw, and the vistas are infinite. From here, descend towards Pangong Lake via Tsaga La and Rizing La, reaching the lakeside village of Mann for a tranquil overnight stay.

Skirt the edge of Pangong before tracing the Shyok River north into Nubra Valley. Swap blue waters for golden dunes, and meet the double-humped Bactrian camels of Hunder. An optional camel safari offers a slow, swaying journey through this cold desert.

Climb to the legendary Khardung La (18,380 ft), a route that has tested and thrilled travelers for decades. Descend into Leh for a relaxed evening wandering its markets and cafés.

Delve into Leh’s heritage with a visit to Thiksey Monastery, its whitewashed walls glowing in the morning light. Continue to the Hall of Fame Museum, a poignant tribute to Ladakh’s defenders, and end at the serene Shanti Stupa, overlooking the city against a backdrop of jagged peaks.

After breakfast, transfer to Leh Airport for your onward journey. As the flight lifts off, watch the barren mountains and glacial rivers shrink beneath you — a landscape you’ve not just seen, but lived.
